Hi

Can anyone help we have just bought a quad in marina del mar, we were told wifi was included in our community charge but whilst there this weekend couldn't access it or find a modum? Does anyone in the area know what we need to do? I also understand we are meant to get SKY but also could not get access to this - don't know if we aren't doing something correctly?

Any advice appreciated.

Thank you Sarah and Brent

Probably best to speak / email the administrator & usually there is a committee member - president / vice president on site.

If there is a big dish somewhere, likely you will be able to get at least free to air TV (Sky may require Sky box or similar). For free wi fi should be quite obvious as to do this you should see some 1.0- 1.5 metre (or so) antennas on roof top somewhere - usually around main communal area.

For the TV there are a few services / system types including cable, so difficult to give you exact advice without knowing / seeing the community.

Firstly you don't get SKY,and the Internet on the marina del mar site struggles to get above 2mb,also you must pay the community around?100,or there abouts. As for the tv channels a selection are available,we paid?150 or there abouts and
They change about a lot, most people buy there own dish and get a reliable broadband provider.your community fees pay for the upkeep of the wifi and cable channels(bbc1 bbc2 etc no sky) should you have it or not.REMEMBER THE CONNECTION COSTS TOO.

If you look at the link below you should be able to find the information you need. If you need to contact someone from the committee they are at the Office on Tuesday mornings only.

This site has not been updated since the 22nd of october last year i see, that was the last committee meeting mentioned,so what ever has happened since then,WHO KNOWS!,Best idea is to email a friend and get them to give you all the relevant news,iv been there 14years,and its still not great, for instance,i went to the community house on the tuesday morning to report a little or no broadband speed, the two ladies jumped up from there seats saying,we need proof,we need proof[ as the broadband is terrible 2mb] little did they know that i had an ipad at my side with a photo of the last 10days of speed tests!,they said ok i will get the guy to call, theres one in front of you,so it will be tomorrow.A full month later and i was still waiting,9months later, still waiting,so got our own private provider,tv always goes down too,so got our own system,so i will leave it up to you to decide which way to go.

We have been asked to review internet for communities - as well as look into existing systems.

The problem seems to be two-fold. Firstly some companies have come in and put a shared system - for example Tooway or similar satellite internet (up to 20Mbps), which is designed for a single user, being shared amongst 50 people! Whilst this could work reasonably well between 5-10 users, at 50 it simply falls over - also if the original service provider finds out what the installing company has done (breach of contract), then will be turned off.

Second issue is the service providers business model - many do offer 'free installations' with community installs - though in reality the savings made to each individual seem to be insignificant as the monthly fees and service are pretty much the same as a singular private installation - so no savings or no performance benefit, ultimately hardly a beneficial solution for all members.

The whole microwave internet rebroadcasting is a very old and not a very good system/s - shared frequencies, slow speeds, interference and issues with signal / line of sight to transmission towers - I believe one reason there are so many of these 'similar' type companies, is that people are constantly changing providers from one poor one to another - elsewhere in the civilised world these systems have long since being used apart from emergency field works. Also to confuse matters further many companies are 'interlinked' so half the time you are dealing with the same company under a different name - for example the adverts which offer Ole (internet) & Torresat TV - same company, just separated the two, just in case the law ever catches up with Torresat for the illegal TV transmissions, the 'internet' side is a different company.

Ultimately no microwave provider will give you anything close to a good landline / Telefonica internet / Fibre Optic

James, I've heard several reports of Telecable's service "coming and going" and other telephone/Internet providers not being a lot of good, one way and another.

I'm with Telefonica and I just can't fault it. The download speed ALWAYS comes out at 8.6 mb and the monthly bill for ADSL, calls in Spain, line rental and IVA (VAT) comes to a total of 43 Euros.

We can phone landlines in many parts of the world (including UK) free of charge using a company called VoipCheap, so no nasty surprises on the bill for that.

If you want a better internet service James, why not 'bite the bullet' and get a fixed line installed? Maybe you're not here enough weeks of the year to warrant it, but at least you'll know it's gonna work well when you ARE here, eh?

Geoff.

I've been with Telecable for over 4 years now and never had a problem. I always get the 6mb/s I pay for. Unlimited free calls to Europe, USA & Canada all for 30?/month.

Hi James,

I, like Geoff, now have a Movistar (Telefonica) line, having previously been with Telecable. The reason we switched is that we have a satellite system and use the Internet to unscramble channels that are coded. Whilst Telecable's service was absolutely fine for our day to day Internet needs, ours was not reliable enough for the tv side of things, and we had constant "freezing" problems, which have been resolved since our switch to Movistar (having said that, my neighbour has a similar tv system and uses Telecable with no internet problems!!). My only issue with Movistar, is that I don't seem to get much more than 6.5 mb download speed (despite paying for 10!!), but as this doesn't affect my usage, it's not caused us any usage problems. With Telecable, speeds were normally around 6mb.

In summary, if we hadn't had the satellite system installed, we would still be quite happily using the Telecable phone/internet system.

Fixed line is generally the most stable, if not too far from exchange you can get good speeds - usually Telefonica can give you an indication of speed.

Where landline not available or is slow, also option of 4G unlimited. It is good, different league to the microwave alternatives - but monthly subscriptions are more costly. Also upload speed is nigh on 10-15 x that of the microwave service provider - usually 0.5-0.75 Mbps. It should also be noted that 3G / 4G speeds also vary depending on local signal strength. In local areas 4G is available.

Below Costa Blanca Broadband / Eurona - paying for 8 & today is on top speed, which is usually not quite the case at this time of day. Normally 4-6 this time of day.

Any advice regarding performance of service providers have to be a little cautious with - as certainly with the microwave internet services, the speed and stability does vary and quite considerably depending on what your location is proximity / distance to transmission mast.

Whist in Almoradi we are on one transmitter locally, those in Orihuela Costa (more densely populated by expats) may well get slower speeds as more users online, different transmitter and distances. Probably the most accurate measurement you can for any of the microwave type service providers take is from a very nearby neighbour - same road. In summary people may well have differing experience or opinions, with the same provider, depending on their locations - which is why it is quite difficult to make an exact recommendation - few variables.

Overall the microwave providers, are a long way from the fastest or most stable, but they are the cheapest. Depends on your usage requirements, if video streaming / IPTV / downloading / uploading and a lot of internet services, they can struggle (IE if you are a heavy user), for a bit of web browsing / email / youtube - o.k most of the time, though still not as stable / reliable as landline.

Creator - Just noticed your embedded picture. Whilst you have 6.03 speed, if you look underneath you will see a category rating of D+ which is towards unstable. May cause the odd problem or two, moreso with heavy demand / video streaming - for web browsing, odd email you may not notice - but for more demanding / heavy users, may not be 100% stable, even at the indicated 6.

  • A An excellent result! Expect all Internet applications to work very well assuming you have sufficient bandwidth. Use Speedtest.net® to see.

MOS greater than 4.37 (Example - a ping below 50 ms with 0% packet loss)
  • B

Very good! Your connection should work well for any Internet application. Some online games may not perform optimally.

MOS between 4.28 and 4.37 (Example - a ping around 90 ms with 0% packet loss)
  • C

Acceptable. Your VoIP quality will suffer some, and you will have a disadvantage in many online games. Most streaming media will be fine. You should try testing again to another server close to you.

MOS between 4.00 and 4.27 (Example - a ping around 150 ms with 1% packet loss)
  • D

Concerning. Most online applications will not perform well but should function in some capacity. Try testing to other servers to verify the result. You might need to contact your ISP for help.

MOS between 2.50 and 3.99 (Example - a ping around 300 ms with 3% packet loss) PING OF THIS SPEED CAN CAUSE ISSUE WITH VIDEO STREAMING / IPTV / CARD SHARE TYPE SYSTEMS/ VOP DELAY ECHO
  • F

Very poor. Real-time Internet application performance will suffer greatly on such a connection. Test to other servers to confirm the result, but definitely talk to your ISP about troubleshooting the issue.
