I posted on this subject three years ago, but am posting again because some people don’t know about it.

If your landline is with Movistar but don’t have either a Domo phone or an answering machine, you can use their free answering service.

To enable it, your telephone has to be the push button type (and I think it has to using the MF setting as opposed to the DEC setting, if there’s a choice).

To enable the service, dial *10#, and replace the phone.

Then pick up the phone and listen to the dial tone until the voice cuts in after a few seconds. You will be told (in Spanish) whether or not you have messages.

To change the answerphone into English, follow these instructions:

1. Pick up the phone and wait for the lady to start talking.
2. Press '1' to access the language change mode
3. Press '4' for English (there are several other languages to choose from)
4. Enter your personal PIN code (initially set to '0000' until you change it)
5. Press '3' , press '1', then finally press '1' to make the changes take effect, and replace the phone

Test that you’ve changed it correctly by picking up the phone and making sure it’s now in English.

To check if messages have been left for you, pick up the phone and wait for the lady to tell you that you have a message. You hear the message, and then need to press

1 to hear it again

2 to save it

3 to delete it

0 to exit from the lady!

If you’re on the phone and someone else tries to ring you, and leaves a message when they can’t get through, the phone will ring once after you replace it to let you know there’s a message waiting for you.

Now you’ve got it in English, access the answering service and press 1 to hear the options for what you can do.

First, you’ll want to record your own message for the answering service.

Second, I suggest you change your access code from the default 0000. You need to change this to enable the facility to access your messages when you’re not at home.

Incidentally, if you use your own phone(s) and not Telefonica’s, why carry on paying rental for it? You can either surrender it or, more easily, pay a minimal sum to buy it off them - I think they charged us only €2.

Another advantage offered by this service is that you can listen to your messages whenever you are away from home and even from an overseas phone.
First of all, you must ensure that you have changed your original pin number (0000).
Call your home number and, when the recorded message from Movistar starts, press the * key.
Introduce your personal pin number.
Listen to your messages.
Easy! I do it all the time whenever I am overseas.
