The tuner is surprisingly good. Using my test reference of Sky movies on a 1.8 / 1.9 - which is in our location on the edge of reception GI's 3158 model whilst a decent receiver the tuner would not pull this in. On the Linux 8120 which is more expensive there seemed to be a clear difference, they did come in. Given the price point expected this receiver to have the same tuner chip as the cheaper 3158, but it does not, seems to have the higher sensitivity tuner of the more expensive Linux model.

Where they have pared the costs back is there is no front panel display or no scart output (but does have a 3.5mm ouput to component, which with a couple of euro adapter you can turn back to scart). So if you don't need a myriad of connections, the money seems to be spent more on the internal components. Additionally the channel change time and menu navigation is quicker than either other receiver indicating a faster than average processor for a box at this price point.

We also have a new single Technomate HD Linux box coming in for test next week, unlike anything else on the market, which has room internally for up to a 3TB hard drive, 7 day epg option and quite a lot of additional multimedia features. Hopefully as good as it sounds, i'll be testing this next week to see if worthwhile.

Hi Fox - different Technomate, though the one in the video review TM 5402 HD is a good sturdy model also & simpler to use than the Linux box I was referring to, the TM Single OE HD,

As the above was posted in January, I have been using the linux box for a couple of months now & it is a powerful multimedia tool. It doubles as a media player, will stream and record from your PC network, or internal hard drive, plays all video files, 7 day program guide and lots of other internet related add ons. However, there is a but. It is a little too complicated for the average person & more aimed at the technically minded / hobbyist. We are hoping over a period of time the software can be locked down / refined and prove stable to be suitable for more people as it is a powerful device. If you just want your basic TV and worried about the extra channels or fripperies, then a non linux satellite receiver will suffice for most.

There are some more Linux boxes on the market locally due soon including the GI Genius, which will allow a dual operating system - the standard satellite receiver type & the linux one, theoretically giving the best of both worlds. If the box is any good, we'll have our test one shortly.

hello,

I am enquiring as my father has a gi genuis tv receiver and he says that there is always a voice over when he watching programmes like as if it were for a blind person so the whole show is being narrated. i was just wondering if you knew how to get this off as he said he has tried everything so my last resort is to email around companies in spain and see if anyone knows how to change this setting? kind regards amy

Hi,

I did some research but have come up blank I'm afraid.I think this is called Audio description.I am not familiar with this model of of receiver but Graham1 who regularly posts on this forum may be.

Perhaps if he sees your post he may be able to help you.

If audio description is enabled, then instructions on how to enable/disable it must be in the user manual. If you haven't got the manual, then go to the manufacturer's website and download the manual for that particular model number.

Think this was covered elsewhere - but just in case not spotted.

The issue as Jack states above - 'audio narrative' designed for those who are visually impaired.

Some satellite receivers have the ability to turn this off in the main setting menu, under audio. However have found of recent times that many receivers only allow you to do this on the main audio button on the remote control - usually the option (if problem) of 'Narr' will be selected and you will see one other option, which is the direct digital feed without the audio overlay, just select that and generally once done, you won't need to do again. Only issue is you may need to do this once on each channel that does this. Seen this happen on 3 or 4 receivers, which i'd put down to a software issue - though easily rectified.
